pairing: Harry/Hermione
series: Harry Potter
rated: R for sensuality.
notes: Mostly canon compliant, I think.

It almost happens at the end of fifth year; actually, that's the first time that either one of them thinks of it happening at all. He notices her differently; the way her body moves, the way she shifts and mirrors his actions at times, the way her sentences finish his. As for her, she's been aware of her attraction to him since gripping Buckbeak's body with her legs and Harry's with her arms, but vague thoughts of kissing him, holding him are now combined with the wicked things whispered in the girl's lavatories, and she thinks, maybe, I would like to let him inside of me.

He's wanking thoughtlessly when an image of her floats by in his brain, a smile and a periwinkle lingerie set. He lets the image stay, buzzing in his mind, until he comes, then tucks it away with the dirty tissue and falls into dreamless sleep.

It's after these events that it could have happened, one of the nights that they were alone in the common room at the end of the year, she reading, he brooding. They gave each other glances as the other focused elsewhere, and thought, I wonder what you taste of.

This budding lust is lost for quite a while after Harry's chest roars with the monster who has eyes only for Ron's sister. It gets lost, but it comes back.

--

The second time it happens, almost, is the night that Harry pulls her into a dance, the locket removed, their eyes shadowed with secrets- and something else. The curious little emotion pops back up again and says hello.

After the moment passes, they drift apart, to opposite sides of the tent, and eat their meal, then tuck into sleep with extra wards and charms to guard them. They lay in their cots, twenty feet apart, a candle their only illumination. She's just beginning to drift off when she hears him whisper something, and she shifts as the cot grows. Without a word to her, he lifts her covers and tucks himself in, rolling, seeking her warmth. He finds her and pushes his hand over her hip, pulling her to him and tucking his chin over her shoulder. He says, "I'm sorry," but she doesn't ask what he's apologizing for. Instead, she lets her arm fall over his, traces down past his wrist and entwines his fingers with her own, then pulls them up across her chest to rest underneath her cheek, so that he's completely holding her. She feels his heart hammering against her back, knows his eyes are closed, and closes hers, too. She thinks it would be so easy- to pull down their bedclothes and push against one another. Too easy. A war is raging, and she just needs him to hold her. She also knows that he just needs someone to hold.

They sleep that way until Ron gets back, after New Year's.

---

The third time, they're at a party. They're five Firewhiskeys in and dancing off in a corner, and they've changed their appearances with charms. It's a Ministry party, held in an old castle in Ireland that's full of broom closets and dark corners for devious deeds. Harry thinks that it reminds him just enough of Hogwarts, and wonders if that was the intention. He fingers Hermione's pretty, straight, fake blonde hair near the punch table and repeats the motion in a cellar below the kitchens several butterbeers later. Her charms were thorough; the carpet matches the drapes, he reflects breathlessly, feeling boneless as she hits her knees on the slate floor and licks him, sending lightning up his spine. She gives him a dirty look when he fails to rise to the occasion.

"How drunk are you, Harry?"
"Shh."

---

The fourth time, James is a year old and they're both living respectable, grown-up lives. The rings on their fingers belong to other people.

It happens this time.

She puts up the charms around their office as he kisses her, wandless magic coming in handy. He is rough and hot and ready this time, and she doesn't cast the same spell she always does before she lets Ron take her. Irrationally, she doesn't want to, because this is Harry. She's being a stupid, stupid girl.

Harry doesn't ask, either. He thinks of it- thinks of his baby son, the boy with brown eyes who will have the life he should have had, the life he will never have, wealth and happiness- and pushes into her. She arches beneath him, scattering papers, and he bends down, peppering her neck with kisses and thinks Yours.

When she feels the first kick, she names the life after his mother's side of the family, another flower. Rose is born thirty nine weeks after. The Weasleys are thrilled.

They both breathe a silent, shared sigh of relief when the pink bundle yawns and reveals her brilliant blue eyes.

---

The fifth time when it could have happened, Ron is away with Ginny and the rest of the families, children and all, while they work a case in Romania. She slips into his bed in their shared hotel room and pulls his hand, lays it over her womb and says, "She's lovely."

He pulls away from her, gives her a cold look.

"Don't you think at least one of your children should be his?"

Then he feels the guilt pull him back to her, and they fall asleep, curled together, the same way they did in the winter of their seventeenth year.

That last line he gives is just chilling and quite the naughty game they play.

In complete agreement.

But this was exactly how I would imagine them to be. Well written!

I really love the 'second time' one - it's just so sweet an believable that it is what they would have done, doing something as simple as just falling asleep together when they both feel so isolated and alone. Great writing.

Love it. The first thing that popped into my head when one of Hermione & Ron's kids was called Rose. Nice that someone else thought the same and put it into a fic :)

This is brilliant (and hot). The second part, especially, made my heart ache!

Aww poor Ron- but gosh it's inevitable really. How did they change the hairs and eyes though? :p

Loved this
He thinks of it- thinks of his baby son, the boy with brown eyes who will have the life he should have had, the life he will never have, wealth and happiness- :(

Well I just figured Rose looked like a Blue-eyed Hermione for purposes of the story. ;)

I liked the idea of Hermione worrying that the baby would have Harry's eyes- bit of a dead giveaway, but they got lucky!
